The Academy for Facility Management recently had the opportunity to celebrate with our newly graduating students in Cape Town. These students completed the Higher Certificate in Facility Management, an NQF Level 5 qualification. Our commencement ceremonies are always very special occasions when we can celebrate the hard work and determination of the students who complete one of our programmes. As our qualification is offered part-time, the students have had to balance work and study, which is never an easy thing to do, but they all agreed that the challenges they faced were worthwhile and that their persistence has paid off. They now hold a qualification that will open new doors and opportunities for them within the facility management field.
At the commencement ceremony we also had an opportunity to recognise Helgard Pienaar with a special charter for outstanding public, academic and intellectual achievement. Helgard was one of the members of the South African Bureau of Standards Technical Committee (TC 267 – Facility Management) that was responsible for formulating the SA National Standard (SANS 1752) in FM. The Academy believes this contribution will have national impact on the local FM industry. It will also have an international impact as SANS 1752 has been offered to ISO as a template for the development of the international standard. While it may be years before the value of these FM standards will be acknowledged by the industry, the Academy is already training FM managers of tomorrow according to the principles and guidelines of these standards.
